why no MD5: MD5 is broken for checking file integrity, and shipping a broken hash would be pretending. SHA-1 is included because old downloads still publish it. If both a modern hash and SHA-1 are available, trust the modern one.
the ceiling: the whole file loads into the page before hashing. A few hundred megabytes is comfortable; a multi-gigabyte file belongs on a real machine.
